Tiger Woods clapped for his son Charlie during a landmark state golf championship (but he didn’t caddie).

Nov, 2023

Tiger Woods is a caddy for his son Charlie. He has gotten to be a teammate. Woods played father at Woods’ 14-year old son’s first state high school golf tournament on Wednesday.

Tiger was in all-black attire, waiting for Charlie to celebrate his first state title with his Benjamin teammates. This would have been against FHSAA rules.

Tiger Woods was as anonymous as it gets on a course.

After his birdie at No. 18, Benjamin sophomore Jake Valentine – the team’s lowest-scoring player with a score of 148 (76-76) – left the 18th hole with a one-stroke winning lead for the Buccaneers. 17. Valentine and Woods had final scores that were separated by just six strokes. However, the Class 1A competition was stacked as usual and Valentine tied for 8th place and Woods placed 26th.

Charlie’s round of 76 at Mission Inn Resort and Club on Day 2 helped The Benjamin School to stay low enough so that they could return to Palm Beach Gardens and win the fourth state title for the program.

The Buccaneer teammates Tyler Bruneau (156), who is a University of Rhode Island commitment, Tyler Colton (149), and Pavel Tsar (152) tied for 12th place, 19th place, and 34th position, respectively.

Tiger, a 15-time major champion on the PGA Tour stood with his legs crossed, leaning his umbrella as if he was waiting to be his turn to sink a puttingt and give a classic fist bump.

Charlie was at the hospital to help you.

Tiger was already a student of Western High School, Anaheim, California when he had the opportunity to run on the varsity fairways.

You mean Tiger Woods was on a high-school golf team too?

“Wait a minute. Wait a minute. What’s wrong with this photo? This is not the Junior Worlds. This isn’t Junior Nationals. This is not a PGA tournament.”

In 1993, an ESPN broadcaster introduced a Tiger aged 17 as he walked with three other high school players in a golf match.

Six times he’s won the World Junior title and twice the U.S. The “world’s top junior golfer” has won the Junior Amateur Championship for the past two years.

The broadcaster continued.

This is a high-school event. “You mean Tiger Woods also plays for a high-school golf team?”

Charlie, who boasted a swing speed above average of up to 117 mph and a drive averaging between 260-270 yards had already beaten dad in December 2022 – “by one yard”, in Tiger’s own words. Charlie’s latest bragging right can be attributed to the California Interscholastic Federation for their decision not to host a state championship on Wednesday.

CIF had divided California into Southern and Northern half when Tiger was in high school. His highest high school win was the CIF SoCal Region in 1991, as a freshman. Tiger won the CIF Southern Section Individual Championship in 1991, 1993 and 1994 during his four years at Western Pioneer. He also earned the Orange County League Most Valuable Player Award each year.

Charlie was raised in the spotlight of the golf world, and the questions surrounding Tiger’s development were the same thirty years later. The public was waiting to see whether he would continue the legacy left by his father, who spent a large part of his youth on television.

Tiger is now instilling Charlie with the same response he gave him back then.

“It’s normal. I’m just a normal teenager. It’s only that I can do one thing better than a typical teenager. Tiger said, “And that’s to play golf.”

Tiger’s ex-teammate said: “If I were you, I would be all cocky.” He’s just always mellow.

The apple did not fall very far from the tree.

Charlie Woods is also a member of a high-school golf team.

Cool it down with ‘C Dub’

Many fans are often found waiting at the green to catch a glimpse of Charlie Woods’ winning fist-pump, which is similar to his father’s. The group gathered at the 18th hole at PGA National in October to watch the 14-year old finish a tournament. Charlie is a young man who has a mellow personality. He makes it look easy to be followed by large groups, the size of which you would expect at professional tournaments.

The attention from the world, and the fact that he was playing alongside Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm didn’t stop the teenager from attending high school football matches to cheer. Benjamin had to go through the same qualifier that everyone else did to be on his golf team. You can also get a cool nickname, like “C Dub”, that will carry over from the halls to the golf course.

The school was his father’s chance to escape. Tiger, a junior in high school, was pictured behind a desk at the time of this 1993 clip. He compared his classroom to a “sanctuary.”

You can find it “away from media.”

When the media shows up, you are no longer a teenager. You’re somebody else,” Tiger said.

One could argue that Charlie’s cool demeanor was a legacy of his predecessor’s unmistakable but humble swagger, which took the nation by storm in decades past.

Charlie is a character who embodies a similar and surprising desire to be “normal”, play golf, and just be.

He was a favorite of his Buccaneer teammates despite being a first-year freshmen. Charlie was chosen by four Benjamin seniors as the fifth member of the team to compete in the South Florida PGA Tour’s West Coast High School Tournament at Cypress Woods Golf and Country Club, Naples.

Toby Harbeck, Benjamin’s coach, said: “I told the kids that I had been coaching this team for over 40 years. That was the most enjoyable trip I have ever taken.”

“Ever.”

Harbeck remarked that Charlie’s victory was an added bonus.

Benjamin returned with a bag full of loot after Charlie’s team best score of 102. Tiger had caddied Charlie for his low-round win at the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championship, Last Chance Florida Regional.

Tiger was a viral sensation at the National Championship two weeks prior in Louisiana, where Charlie tied for 17th place (77-78-65) and Tiger went viral for Charlie. After a period of time off due to ankle surgery, which saw him withdraw from the 2023 Masters he recently began practicing again. A limp-less Tiger caddying for 54 holes became the focus of media.

Charlie, on the other hand, was trying to get in a few solid practice rounds for state after Benjamin had not approached the tee-box at district or regionals.

Harbeck said that these lessons are part of being a member of a team. Every Buccaneer had to learn these lessons at one time or another.

“He is having a great year.” Harbeck told the media in October that “He’s enjoying himself.” Benjamin was the runner-up at The Palm Beaches High School Invitational in The Classic, and Charlie had a score of 154 (79-75)

Woods’ younger self finished in a tie with 30 other players, despite the wet and windy conditions. He experienced the growing pains that every young golfer experiences, but he did it with finesse.

Harbeck scurried to the cart on the 14th at PGA National just before the infamous Bear Trap began. Charlie was preparing to tee-off on the par 4 hole.

Harbeck remembered that “my player in front of me took his driver, and he knocked the ball right through the fairway and into the hazards.” To avoid further chaos, Harbeck asked Charlie to tell him what he had seen on his rangefinder.

“I got 340,” Charlie responded. The yardage of the gold tees is 442.

Harbeck, heeding the warning of Charlie’s victimized colleague, said: “Alright, you pull it.”

Harbeck laughed. “He got there and just tore it right down the middle.”

Charlie, as he walked to the tee-box, admitted defeat.

You were right, coach.

Harbeck “hoped” that Charlie could have a tee-time at states after that tournament. Harbeck, who had to choose between eight golfers of high caliber, was “hurt” by the decision he made. Benjamin won both District 13 and Region 4 championships.

Harbeck stated that “going to five is really difficult.” “But the guys who have been on this team for many years have had to go through it as well.”

I think he really understands what team golf is about now. Harbeck said that it is fun for him because he is used to playing alone.

Now, he has teammates who love him being around.

Benjamin’s young Tiger earned his stripes during his first high school golf season.

They also come with a championship medallion for Charlie and the Bucs.
