Available March 10, 2010
Who it’s for: For golfers who play in hard, firm conditions and require a low bounce option around the greens.
The Skinny Thanks to its narrow sole and low bounce the SM9T Grind allows skilled players to get the edge under tight lies and take a wider range of shortgame shots.
Cameron Smith won the British Open last season on the Old Course at St. Andrews. He had a secret weapon to deal with the extremely-firm ground. Jordan Spieth, a two-time PGA Championship winner, brought the same secret weapon to Royal Melbourne 2019. He shared it with Justin Thomas.
It’s not a secret. It’s a Vokey Design T Grind wedge. Until now, the club was only available to Tour players or custom order at Titleist’s WedgeWorks program. The Vokey Design SM9 lineup now includes the T Grind as a seventh stock grinder.
Unique features of the T Grind include a very low bounce angle (just 4 degrees), a narrow crescent-shaped front and wider back flange. The T Grind is a lower-bounce option than the L Grind. It has a narrower forwardsole and more aggressive heel and toe. This can help you open your face, play more shots, and get under the ball when it’s tight.
Smith, Spieth, and Thomas all have played it on links-style course. Cameron Young and Will Zalatoris, both pros, use the SM9T Grind frequently.
The T grind can only be ordered as a 58 or 60-degree lob-wedge and is available in three finishes: tour Chrome, brushed Steel and Jet Black. You can also order raw steel finishes.
