Tom Watson is frustrated by the lack of answers regarding the PGA Tour and Saudi Arabia partnership

Aug, 2023

Tom Watson , an eight-time major winner, wrote a letter in June to Monahan and the Tour Policy Board, asking more than a dozen specific questions.

Gary Williams, the host of The 5 Clubs Podcast asked Watson how much hesitation he had about writing that letter.

Watson replied, “I didn’t have any.” This was a complete deviation from where I thought that the Tour should be going.

Watson’s unanswered questions are still unanswered more than two months after they were asked.

He said that the saddest thing was that none of the questions asked in this letter had been answered. Not one. We are waiting for answers. “I can’t say anything until we have the answers.”

Watson, who is a member of World Golf Hall of Fame, and one of golf’s most distinguished athletes, has always been able to express his opinions on the way the Tour should be headed.

He said, “I believe the Board needs a restructuring to give the players voting power. This is a players organization.” “This organization did not follow the proper procedure.” The process was not transparent. In the PIF negotiations, Yasir Al-Rumayyan (chairperson of PIF) and I were not involved in any way. This was exactly what needed to happen. It was a big mistake. I agree with the players. At least one player should have been involved. “We have people who are making decisions which really shape the future of PGA Tour Golf and without player involvement in these decisions, we’re heading in the wrong directions.”
