TOUR REPORT: Jordan Spieth’s driver changes, Josh Allen’s SICK putter and Kisner’s new Wilson setup

Feb, 2023

Monterey Peninsula is one of the most stunning golf properties in the world. This is where you will find the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

This week is, in my opinion one of the most exciting weeks for entertainment with golf equipment. Because the field is filled with stars who have different levels of industry access and skill sets, it’s a great place to see how celebrities set up their golf bags. It’s fascinating to see how celebrities set up their golf bags. You just never know what type of clubs you might find.

Jordan Spieth, who is a well-known celebrity in the golfing industry, made a surprising driver change this week. We also got an amazing Arnold Palmer history lesson at Pebble Beach.

It was a busy week in the world of golf equipment. Let’s get into this week’s Tour Report from the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Michael Pena is a gearhead?

Actor Michael Pena is a single-digit handicap golfer and was testing two drivers at the start of the week – a Callaway Paradym, and a Ping G430. Pena chose the Paradym by the time the event began. Pena was also trying out two other putters – a Bettinardi BB8 or BB8 Tri.

To get dialed in, why not try out the different clubs at this event? Pena must be a part of us.

Carlton’s saucy putter

Alfonso Ribeiro is best known for his role in the Fresh Princes of Bel-Air as Carlton. He has a low handicap of just one digit.

Ribeiro uses Ping’s G430 metalwoods, and the i230 iron models. He has new clubs that almost cover the bag. However, he does use an older Ping Sigma2 Tyne putting putter that was released in 2018. Ribeiro’s putter is also covered with lead tape, which proves that he has a flair for things.

Charles Kelley is a country singer who also sings lead vocals for Lady A. He uses a TaylorMade Ghost Manta putter that was released in 2012. Although the paint job is better, golf balls aren’t concerned about how it looks. Kelley claims that it’s still in the bag after three years.

Kira’s 7-wood

Kira K. Dixon is a reporter for Golf Channel and Miss America 2015. She has an eclectic set of golf bags, including a Callaway Epic Max that she equipped with a Project X Cypher Fifty 5.5 shaft.

Macklemore embraces Bogeys

Macklemore, the “Thrift Shop” rapper, isn’t the greatest golfer in Pro-Am. But his outfits are definitely the most striking. The Bogey Boys lifestyle brand is owned by the Seattle native. It has a unique fashion style and embraces bogeys. His custom TaylorMade P-790 irons are laser-etched with his “Bogey Boys brand name”.

Amanda turns the mic down

Amanda Balionis Renner is a CBS Sports reporter and often asks golfers questions. We were able to see her club layout as she participated in celebrity challenges at The Hay this week, just weeks before the event. The all-new Callaway Maradym steelwoods and Paradym irons were on display, as was her custom Odyssey Toulon putter, which came with a white-and green LA Golf shaft.

Darius introduces a new PXG-driver?

Celebrities don’t often reveal unreleased prototypes of their clubs, but Darius Rucker, a musician and PXG staffer, is the perfect person to showcase a new PXG Gen60311 XF driver. The looks of Rucker’s Gen6 show that PXG has moved the three weight ports out to the outer perimeters of the soles. This is likely to increase forgiveness.

Arnold Palmer’s $250k irons

A putting green lies behind the Pebble Beach first tee. There are a number of shops that sell golf equipment with green awnings surrounding it. One of these shops, ” Links to the Past,” has amazing stories and antique memorabilia.

A set of Arnold Palmer’s used irons can be seen along the back wall. They are actually Palmer’s Wilson Staff Model Dyna-Powered custom irons. He used them to win 14 times between 1960 and 1961, including the 60 Masters and the 61 Open Championship.

Golf Links to The Past is selling them for $275,000

What is the story behind the purchase of the golf clubs by the store? And why are they so expensive? Read the whole story.

Another Arnie story that you might not have known

The Pebble Beach Visitors Center is located across the street from the clubhouse. It’s worth a visit if you’re interested in the history and geography of the area. Inside, you’ll find gold nuggets everywhere. The story of “Palmer on the Rocks”, as told in the photo, was one that caught my attention.

Jordan Spieth’s dramatic driver change

Spieth has opted mostly for Titleist’s TSR3 driver model over the past several years. Spieth did a short stint with Titleist’s TSR3 driver model during the 2022 Travelers Champion, but he hasn’t been able to upgrade from his TSi3.

Spieth started to experiment with the Titleist TSR2 model this week ahead of the 2023 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Spieth discovered that the TSR2 model, set in the D-1 hosel setting by Titleist, allowed him to maintain his spin numbers and offer greater forgiveness when hitting shots with varying trajectories.

This week’s PGA Tour Equipment Report focuses on Spieth’s unexpected driver change. Read more

Camilo Villegas’ lofts at the golf club

Villegas is carrying Srixon’s ZX7 MKII irons, but his lofts may be out of stock. Villegas has written his club lofts in the back cavities. This means that his 7-iron is set at 36 degrees. This is 4 degrees less than the 32-degree stock iron spec. Interestingly, Villegas plays the Titleist TSi3 11 degree head on the PGA Tour. It’s in a C1 setting which reduces it by 0.75 degrees.

Kevin Kisner’s Wilson set

Kisner signed a new contract with Wilson, the first time in his professional career. This was one of the largest off-season equipment changes on the PGA Tour. We saw his equipment set up as a Wilson full-time staffer at Pebble Beach.

Take a look at his complete setup: Kevin Kisner’s 2023 WITB

We say farewell to the stunning cliffs at Pebble Beach. Next week, we’ll be seeing you at “The Greatest Show on Grass”, the 2023 WM Phoenix Open.
