TOUR REPORT: McIlroy switches drivers during Genesis Invitational (plus Tiger’s iron change)

Feb, 2023

The 2023 Genesis Invitational, also known as Tiger’s Event, is now open at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades (California).

Tiger Woods, the tournament host, was expected to be there despite questions about his injuries. However, he actually played in the tournament. We were fortunate to get a special look at his clubs, including his Scotty Cameron Newport2 GSS putter.

Apart from Woods’ clubs it was an interesting week in golf equipment overall with notable switches by Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood, Jordan Spieth and Adam Scott.

For all the equipment highlights, let’s dive into the Tour Report for this week.

Jordan Spieth finally changes his putter grips

Spieth still uses his Scotty Cameron 009 putterhead, but this week he switched to a SuperStroke Flatso 1.0 grip. It was also about time because his old SuperStroke Traxion handle was almost falling apart due to its age. reported that SuperStroke’s new Zenergy grips have an enhanced gripping area and several new color options. Justin Thomas changed to a new JT Zenergy grip last week. Xander Schaffele also switched to one this week.

Tommy Fleetwood performs a putter switch

Fleetwood is a prolific putter tester, but he doesn’t always switch to a different putter. He is a frequent tester of new putters but he still prefers his Odyssey White Hot Pro #3. Fleetwood tried out an Axis1 TM Elite prototype putter and a face insert this week, and he was happy to give it a try.

Scott began testing a custom-made L.A.B. on Monday while playing a round at The Los Angeles Country Club North to prepare for the 2023 U.S. Open. The TPT prototype shaft was fitted with the Golf MEZZ.1 Long Putter, which features dancing kangaroos and a sole. He put the putter into play at the Genesis Invitational, apparently the testing session went well.

Scott was able to get his putter closer to the ground when Axis1 adjusted his lie angle to 79.5 degrees to 78 degrees. He tried out the Ping G430 LST driver but decided to stay with his TaylorMade StealthPlus driver. This driver offered slightly better flight characteristics to help him navigate the windy conditions this week.

Rory McIlroy switches to mid-event driving

Rory McIlroy was seen testing the TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus at 2023 Waste Management Phoenix Open. However, he stayed in his Stealth Plus. After a range session, he changed to the Stealth Plus for round 2, even though he had started the Genesis Invitational with the Stealth Plus in round 1. A TaylorMade representative said that he found the Stealth 2 Plus to be faster and more distance.

A GOAT’s iron change

Woods made two small changes to his bag setup in the past year at the 2023 PNC Championship. Woods switched his P-770 3-iron to the 2023 P-770 model and also replaced the Scotty Cameron putter grip that he used at PNC with a familiar Ping Pistol grip.

We also had a chance to see Woods’ Scotty Cameron Newport2 GSS putter, which he used to win 14 of his 15 major championship wins.
