This weekend, LIV Golf dominated the DP World Tour.
Joaquin Niemann, 25, made an eagle at the second playoff hole in order to beat Rikuya HOSHINO and become the first South American champion of the ISPS Handa Australian Open on Sunday at the Australian Golf Club. The 25-year old Chilean missed a shorter eagle-putting opportunity on the hole before, which would have earned him his victory.
It was a lovely day. Niemann said that the two last playoff holes were a good reflection of how he had been playing in Australia. “My putting isn’t the best but I have been working on it. It was nice to make that final putt.”
Dean Burmester won the Investec South African Championship in South Africa by three shots. Burmester also won the Joburg Open last week by three shots.
“Back-to-back. “I’ve never done it before, so that was very special,” Burmester stated after the round. As a South African, it’s a tournament I’ve wanted to win for ages. It’s a special thing to be a part of this tournament, and win it with a sponsor that helped me get started as a child.
Burmester, who finished third in Orlando and five other top-10 finishes during the 2023 season, ranked 14th overall on LIV Golf’s points list. Niemann, who also had five top-10 finishes, was slightly lower down at 21st.
