Two PGA Tour stars are calling for a change in the format of the Tour Championship, but not at East Lake

Aug, 2023

Xander Stauffele capped off his PGA Tour rookie of the year season in 2017 by winning the Tour Championship.

The 29-year old has become the Tour’s ATM over the past six years with consecutive finishes of 1T7-2, T2-T5-4. Schauffele is a 29-year-old golfer who knows his stuff about the Tour Championship and East Lake Golf Club, Atlanta’s host. He didn’t hold anything back when discussing both events ahead of 2023’s Tour Championship.

The Tour Championship is the culmination for a long-running race for the FedEx Cup. It features a staggered starting system to reward players based on their performance throughout the season. The world’s No. 1 player in the FedEx Cup rankings, Scottie Scheffler, will start at 10 under. Scottie Scheffler will start 10 under par, followed by Viktor Hovland at 8 under par, Rory McIlroy at 7 under, and so forth. Schauffele starts 15th with 3 under.

“I’m happy to say that I have been on both sides. I have never won the FedEx Cup, but I have won this event. I received a trophy. I also won it without a trophy. Schauffele said he couldn’t comment because he hadn’t come up with a better solution. He also admitted that despite his earlier claim, ‘I didn’t even know how the tournament worked’, ‘I haven’t been able to think of any way I could make it work better’.

He continued, “I believe that some people still feel confused when I speak to them about how everything happens.” “I believe this is supposed be our biggest event of the year. It all comes down to the moment. It’s not finished to me.

Jon Rahm is not shy about his opinion on the Tour Championship. He admits that the format has been simplified, but he believes there’s still work to be done.

The world No. 1 said, “I don’t believe it’s the best that we can do.” 3. “I’m sure I’ve already expressed my disapproval of the fact that you could be ranked No. FedEx Cup. You can win all tournaments up to this one. If you have a bad weekend, you will forever be known for your 30th place in the FedEx Cup. “I don’t believe that’s fair.”

The Spaniard preferred the old format, because if you entered the week ranked No. They rarely dropped out of the top 3.

He explained, “But you’re also five shots away from 30th place when you’re fifth. “But you are also five shots away from 30th position.” “That doesn’t seem to make sense at all.”

If you ask me, I believe we can do better.

As Schauffele points, however, once the scores are evened out in the first rounds on Thursday and Friday, everyone will be on the same page until the end.

Schauffele said, “It doesn’t matter how it began anymore. It’s about how you finish.” “Everyone knows what is going on as the guys come down this final stretch at East Lake. Everyone knows what is at stake.”

The final stretch of the course will be drastically different next year, as the club plans to undertake a “dramatic” renovation to the entire East Lake infrastructure including drainage and irrigation.

Schauffele said, “I’m not one to change anything that is already great.” When I go to a good restaurant, I order the same thing over and again. It’s hard. It’s hard.

Schauffele said, “The guy who’s coming, Andrew Green, is going to arrive and he has told me he will be removing a lot trees. It’s a bit concerning to be honest.” “I am not a member.” I can hear the members excited. As a Tour professional, we talk a lot about distance, but we can’t hit through trees. When you remove a lot of trees from a property, it can definitely change the way it plays. East Lake needs to keep its teeth. When it plays hard, you can shoot 10- or 12-under and win this tournament.”

Schauffele Rahm are competitors at the Tour Championship this week and next month (and the Ryder Cup). But they agree on the host course and the Tour Championship.

Rahm said, “If it were up to me, this golf course wouldn’t need much changing.” “With that in mind, the golf club belongs to its members. They should therefore do what they think is best. This is what I’d say. “I think it’s wonderful the way it is now. But if they wish to make it more member-friendly, then I have no objection.”

East Lake is a club that serves its members, just like the PGA Tour. Will the Tour listen to its members?
