Two veteran blade-iron users switch to cavity-back Irons at Wyndham Championship

Aug, 2023

Remember when most PGA Tour players played with a full set blade irons on the course?

The days were different.

Unfortunately, blade irons are rapidly losing popularity. Even golfers who have used blade irons for their entire career are now switching to more forgiving irons.

Golf equipment manufacturers are now designing more compact and smaller cavityback irons that combine a blade-style look with cavity-back forgiveness.

Rickie Fowler used blade irons as a college player and on the PGA Tour for over a decade. He collaborated with Cobra to create a set of Rev33 Blade Irons that were so small and thin, they shocked people.

Now in 2023, Fowler is using a complete set of CB’s via the Cobra King Tour Irons. He’s playing his best golf in five years.

Webb Simpson, Adam Scott and other blade users will be using full sets of cavitybacks at the Wyndham Championship in 2023.

Simpson has recently switched to a set of Titleist 682.WS blade Irons. This was back in November 2022. For years, he used Titleist’s 680 classic models. Simpson switched to Titleist’s new T100 irons this week. They feature a dual cavity construction.

Simpson spoke briefly with GolfWRX.com about the change on Wednesday at Wyndham Championship.

“I have been practicing [with the new T100’s] in my home, and I feel that, even out of rough, they are a little bit better. The mishits have improved a bit. Just a little. “I’m still getting use to them.”

Simpson was spotted on Wednesday carrying a complete set of T100 irons, but because he is “still getting use to them,” it’s possible that the situation will remain fluid throughout the transition. Simpson was photographed on Thursday using and at least one T100 Long Iron.

Scott, like Simpson, has used Titleist 680 irons for many years. Scott has also used custom Titleist 681.MB irons and most recently Miura’s AS-1 blades.

Scott, however, conducted extensive iron testing, including various head models of different brands, ahead of the 2023 Wyndham championship. Scott’s Titleist 620CB irons were confirmed to have been used by Scott in the first round on Thursday.

Adam Scott, who is well known for using the most blazing of blade irons, switched to cavitybacks.

There is only one question I have for amateur golfers that still use blade irons in their full sets: Why do you do it?
