Vokey wedges or a mid-handicapper’s best friend? – GolfWRXers discuss

Aug, 2023

In the forums of our site, members are discussing Vokey wedges. JPH is a midhandicapper who starts off by saying:

Am I the only person who has a hard time using Vokey Wedges consistently? My three Vokey Wedges are great for practice, but difficult to play in a tournament. I will go back to my old iron set gap, and perhaps return to the Cleveland Cbx style in the near future. Have I really bitten off too much? Thanks.”

  • XHoop24 : “Mid Handicap Here! Vokey’s is the best option for 54 and 50. It depends on the way you use the wedge. A set-matching gap wedge is likely to be more forgiving on full shots than say, a Vokey at 50 degrees. Vokey wedges at 50 degrees were too forgiving on full shots. I ended up missing the green with many of my mishits. I have kept both the 54 and the 58. The turf interaction is great on both .”

  • philly2kuk says: “I am a 12, and I just changed from set gap into vokey gap in order to match the other wedges. It has been great. I’m now closer to the pin, and can make shots that I could not do before. If you have lost confidence in your game, it’s worth trying another sport to satisfy the itch .”

  • Tyler724: I would guess that you have grinds which are not suitable for you. I’m a mid-capper, and couldn’t imagine using a thicker cavity wedge for my lofts higher than a 3. I use my gap wedge (set A) but also a Vokey 54-degree and 60 degree with no problems. Find a grind that you like, and then practice it as much as possible to become comfortable. .”
