Wake Forest and Florida State win Jackson T. Stephens Cups, defending national champions

Oct, 2023

Wake Forest’s women’s team has a history of success in matches played throughout the year.

In May, the Demon Deacons won their first NCAA Championship ever in Scottsdale, Arizona, after going 3-0 at Grayhawk Golf Club. They added another match-play win to their total on Wednesday.

Wake Forest, which had a new lineup from the victory of five months earlier, won the 2023 Jackson T. Stephens Cup, beating Texas 3-2 on the Trinity Forest Golf Club. The Demon Deacons lost to Stanford last year in the tournament. Wake Forest, which finished second in stroke-play this year, had two veterans and a freshmen put on a great performance to win their second fall victory.

Wake Forest’s Kim Lewellen explained that when adding new players to the team, it is important to play many tournaments in order to determine what they are capable of. This is why we have stacked up a lot tournaments in the fall. We are using it to gather information and build up for next spring.

Macy Pate was one of the newcomers who won the match against No. Twelve Texas defeated fellow freshman Farah o’Keefe. Pate beat O’Keefe 4 to 2 after being behind through four holes.

Lewellen stated that “you don’t always know what you are getting when you hire someone, but her work ethic and IQ is very professional right from the start.” She played the match beautifully.”

The Demon Deacons also earned points from four-time All-American Rachel Kuehn who defeated Bohyun Kim 5 to 4 and Carolina Lopez-Chacarra who beat Lauren Kim, the individual medalist, 3 to 1.

On the men’s side it was No. After 54 holes of stroke-play, Florida State’s No. 23 Arizona 3-2.

The Wildcats missed an opportunity to force additional holes. Brett Roberts, Florida State’s Brett Roberts, was one up on the 18th hole when his approach shot went too far. The match was tied at 2. He then left his chip short, missed a par-putting putt and Arizona’s Johnny Walker was left with two putts.

Walker’s putt for a birdie slid by about 3 feet. However, he missed the par putt, which gave the Seminoles the win.

Florida State Coach Trey Jones stated, “We will just keep learning.” “Last season, we lost in the match play to North Carolina. We won this year. “But it’s about the guys.”

Jack Bigham, who was a part of Florida State’s lineup last week, missed the NCAA Championship semifinals. The Seminoles showed their depth despite Bigham’s absence. He was preparing for World Amateur Team Championship, which will be held in Abu Dhabi in one week.

Frederik Kjettrup won the first point with a 4-and-3 win in the leadoff position. Luke Clanton won the anchor position with a score of 5-and-3. Roberts was the next to score, despite his miscue at the 18th.

Jones said that the reason for the depth was the culture of the company. It doesn’t matter who is in there.
