Watch what happened when a hyena tried to approach a golfer in South Africa

Sep, 2023

Skukuza Golf Club is unique in South Africa. The unfenced course is surrounded with a wildlife refuge and opened to guests of the sprawling Kruger National Park. So, large animals are common.

Skukuza is described as “one the most unique nine-hole golf course in the world” because it has no bunkers, but lots of trees.

What about a hyena following a group closely? That’s an unusual experience, even for Skukuza.

This video, by Neil Whyte, shows a hyena closely following a golfer as he walks from the tee box to the green.

Our friends at for the Win have more to say about this hyena-golfer story.

Whyte said in the video, “Gotta a new caddie at the golf course,” and stopped while the hyena was within yards of him before turning to his right.

Uncertain is whether the hyena hoped for a gift or if there were other hyenas nearby.

Skukuza Golf club, situated in Kruger National Park is described on Facebook as follows: “For those wondering if people play golf on our courses… YES, they do, and they tend make new friends on the way.”

One of the most popular comments is: “That hyena will be eating my dead body, because I’d have a heartattack right there.”

The club released footage in June showing lions grazing on a tee-box before dawn, just as the nine-hole golf course was opening for play.

On its website, the course says: “Since there is no fence around the course, it’s common to see uninvited observers, such as baboons, hippopotamuses, impalas, and warthogs.”
