If you are prone to playing in the sand you may have done the same thing as Xander Schauffele twice during Saturday’s third round of the U.S. Open.
Schauffele, who was in a fairway bunker on the first, had no hope of making it to the green with his second shot. So he grabbed a wedge, and tried to hit the ball over the lip of bunker into the fairway.
Thump.
His ball went through the lip and then rolled backwards before landing in his bunker. Oh, well. Try again.
Thump.
Schauffele needed not just one shot, but three to escape the fairway bunker. He was able get up and go for a great save. But it wasn’t the best way to start his third round, as he had started just two shots behind the leader.
