‘What in the holy golden bell did I just see?’ – Why Tiger left Brandel Chamblee stunned during the Match

Dec, 2022

Bryson DeChambeau trained hard, very hard, to go past the 200mph ball speed required for the World Long Drive Championships.

The contortion and strain on back and hips are visible in every video he has and continues to release, in an attempt to be the longest and fastest of them all.

Imagine his frustration then if a recent tweet by Brandel Chamblee proves to be fact.

Yesterday, the Golf Channel analyst posted a recording from his own television of a section of The Match VII, a made-for-tv event between teams Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, and Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth.

In the video, the 15-time major champion is seen smoothly striking his driver down the fairway before the producers reveal the ball speed – a stunning 182 mph!

Given the average PGA Tour player records around 172mph, Tiger’s number puts him alongside the likes of Jon Rahm, Cam Davis and Sam Burns, all readily fit from playing week-in-week-out. Tiger, let’s not forget, hasn’t played a competitive round since missing the cut at the 150th Open Championship in July, and pulled out of his own Hero World Challenge a couple of weeks ago, suffering with plantar fasciitis.

Response to the number was less than encouraging.

With Tiger requiring a cart to get around the course, most viewers simply did not believe the figure.

Twitter users can see the replies, varying from, “no way is that a 121mph swing, ” to a more positive, “it’s call core and muscle pressure.”

Tiger’s fans believe, though, so who really knows?

From, “Make believe, trackman again,” to, “Man said he had all the shots. Not sure why you didn’t believe him,” Tiger Woods again steals the show.

Ain’t that always the truth?
