Who is Jack Nicklaus? Jack Nicklaus’s friends, family and foes provide insight into his true character

Jun, 2023

I’m not in the same circles with Jack Nicklaus. It’s a shocker, I know. I have a connection to the Bear mainly because of my coverage of the Memorial Tournament over the past 25 years, as well as reading books by and about Upper Arlington natives and knowing people who are familiar with him.

Due to our limited interactions, my opinion of golf’s most famous champion is a tiny speck on a gemstone of a sports icon who has always been gracious. Even when the Bear gets irritated by the odd unfavorable report among the dozens that are flattering.

Jack, as I know him, makes his point on that subject and then moves on. He may not be able to agree with other points of views or fully understand why a fact that was illuminating had to be added into a positive story but he does not hold ill will against the writer.

It is not that Nicklaus does not use his tongue when the opportunity arises. But, ask anyone who has experienced his wit. They will tell you his verbal jabs are harmless when understood as he only teases people he likes.

Don’t just take my word. Listen to those who are more familiar with Nicklaus than I am. He is not just a golfer, but also a father, friend and humanitarian. Nicklaus, who lives in Florida, has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for hospitals serving children.

The following is a collection anecdotes and insights from close friends and associates who are the best people to know Nicklaus. In one instance, Nicklaus knew him better than anyone else. The comments have been edited to ensure clarity and conciseness.
