Next week, the 2023 Ryder Cup will be held at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club near Rome. Bulletin board materials are already beginning to appear.
Wyndham Clark, a member of the United States Team, was asked during an appearance on Golf Channel’s “Golf Today” about possibly taking on Rory McIlroy at Sunday singles. You can be sure he would not shy away from the challenge.
“That’s who I want.” I would love to play Rory. I’m not kidding when I say I respect Rory. He’s one our greatest ambassadors for our game. He’s clearly one of the most successful of all time, and his career continues. Rory is someone I admire greatly. Due to my respect for him, I want to also beat him. I think I’m better than him and I want to prove it.
“I hope I get the chance to do it. I think that would be like a David and Goliath story.”
I have a lot of respect for Rory. “I respect him and I want to beat Rory.” – U.S. Open winner @Wyndham_Clark, on the prospect of playing @McIlroyRory at the @rydercup. pic.twitter.com/PvTWIjzkDF

U.S. Fans should be thrilled to hear that.
Clark won his first major title at the U.S. Open earlier this year, when he beat McIlroy in a one-shot victory. Clark won the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club earlier this year. Clark’s only top-10 finish on the PGA Tour since his LA win is a 3rd place at Tour Championship.
McIlroy, on the other hand, will represent Europe for the 7th time. Clark is making his Ryder Cup début. He has an overall record 12-12-4 and a Sunday singles record 3-2-1. In 2021, he beat Xander Schnaffele at Whistling Strits. This was the only bright spot in Wisconsin for the Northern Irishman.
