Zach Johnson talks about being “a gnat,” the U.S. Alpha and Tiger Woods becoming the 13th member of Team USA

Sep, 2023

Zach Johnson’s playing career has exceeded all expectations.

Former Drake University golfer was not even the No. He said that he was never the best player on his team, but he kept improving every year. He would eventually win 12 PGA Tour championships including two major titles, the 2007 Masters, and the 2015 British Open, both played on the Old Course in St. Andrews. He became the only golfer in history to have won majors at both St. Andrews, and Augusta National. This exclusive group includes Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus.

Johnson was appointed Team USA Captain in February 2022 for the Ryder Cup which starts on September 29 at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome.

Johnson played for the U.S. team five times in the Ryder Cup. He was part of the winning side in 2016 and has a record of 8-7-2. Johnson served as vice captain for the two most recent editions of this biennial event in 2018 and in 2021.

Johnson could be the man for the job. It sounds impossible to win in Europe, something that the American team hasn’t achieved in over 30 years. Johnson, who was competing in the Fortinet Championship at Napa, California last week, sat exclusively down with golfweek to answer the following questions.
