Zach Johnson, U.S. Ryder Cup Captain, on discovering LIV Golf broadcasts: “CW?” I didn’t even know that!

May, 2023

Zach Johnson, who was concentrating on his golf game, shot a 71 in the final round of 2023 PGA Championship. This included five birdies and four bogeys, as well as a double at No. 17. Johnson, despite making the cut at Oak Hill Country Club, struggled with a score of 10-over-290 over four days.

Johnson also pays attention to the course, since the selection process for 2023 Ryder Cup approaches quickly and it’s his first tour as captain of the U.S. Team.

Johnson hinted that he wouldn’t attend an LIV Golf tournament to scout potential players. When asked where he watched the new golf series, Johnson made a subtle, if not unintentional, snub at the network broadcasts.

This is how the interview with the reporter went.

Q. Are you a subscriber to the CW… or YouTube for their broadcasts?

ZACH JOHANSON: CCW?

What is the answer to?

ZACH JOHANSON: That’s something I didn’t even know. I’m going to have to ask my children. I’m not sure I understand the CW.

Six players will automatically qualify for his team through a points system. To be eligible, LIV players must win at least one major. Johnson will be able to choose six players from among the LIV qualifiers in order to complete the rest of his team.

Johnson was asked what he thought of Koepka’s determination, after he birdied the first three holes at Oak Hill to establish a commanding advantage.

Look at his previous resume. Johnson called Koepka an “amazing player”. What I admire about Brooks, is how he approaches his work at massive tournaments. He is a rare mental breed that can perform at his best even in the most trying and difficult of circumstances.

Koepka Dustin Johnson Bryson deChambeau have all played in the Ryder Cup. Because LIV members paid their dues prior to June 30, 2022 they retain their PGA of America Membership through June 2023. Then, there is a grace period which runs until June 2024. Each of them could be selected to the team.

Johnson said that he takes into account chemistry when deciding on his dozen picks.

I mentioned chemistry. Johnson stated, “I don’t remember mentioning character.” Take that into context. Chemistry is crucial for any team. It is important for any leadership in any team. If you want to win, it’s crucial to have a solid foundation for anything you build. My No. As a leader, my No. “Time will tell.”
