SARASOTA (Florida) — Residents and visitors will be able soon to play golf in the newly upgraded Bobby Jones Golf Club.
Richard Mandell is the architect of the renovations to the golf complex. He said that the 18-hole driving range and course are scheduled to open early in November. Bobby Jones Nature Park and a 9 hole short course are also scheduled to open in early November.
Re-opening the municipal course marks the beginning of a new age. The fate of Donald Ross’s 1920s course was a source of debate for many years among city leaders.
The final decision was to reduce the number holes from 45 to 27, and to turn a portion of the property into park. The property was also permanently protected, so that it would never be subdivided.
The public will have access to the nature park, which will feature trails for walking or biking.
Mandell, architect of the project, and his construction crew restore the 18-hole Donald Ross course. The construction crew is also building an adjustable par-3 course with nine holes.
Mandell stated that they are in the “grow-in stage” of the project. The grass has been planted and is now growing. The grass must be mature before people can play golf there.
Mandell added that the construction team would also remove the weeds and rake sand from the bunkers.
He said: “We’re almost done.” As long as the weather cooperates I’m sure it will be grown in by early November and look and play great.
The temporary clubhouse will be a triple-wide, modular building while the permanent clubhouse is being built. e
Mandell stated that the course exceeded his expectations.
He said, “I hope the locals will love it and enjoy their stay.” He hopes it will become a popular destination for winter vacationers and gain national recognition.
